Not sleeping to Sleeping!!
Everything has changed since the day the "miracle blanket" arrived in the mail. A few days before, a nurse from the hospital called here to talk about how things are going and I explained to her how for the past week and a half, Maddie was only sleeping about 7 hours in a 24 hour period. She told me to order this blanket and try it out. It's basically a swaddle blanket with extra material to wrap the arms inside and there is no chance for any baby to get out of it. The first night, Maddie went 7 hours sleeping in a row using the blanket! The next day she was able to take naps like the babies I read about in books! It has now been over a week of this pattern and I am wondering if I am getting closer to the much desired "schedule" moms tell me about.
Today she made a new vocalization of "ah goo" instead of just "ah ah ahh" and "oo oo" which made me very excited! Now I can see how every mom seems to think these little developments are so worth mentioning- it is so neat to see your daughter growing and developing and taking more and more steps forward... and it seems to be going so quickly!
She is also reacting to our smiles and will just smile and coo at us when we put our face up close to hers and act very excited and talk in high voices. We keep trying to capture it on camera but all the photos don't seem to get the smiles at their best.
She has her 2 month doctors appointment with shots coming up! That's about it. She has become quite an easy baby now that she is sleeping through the night! Now we have to tackle the whole taking naps during the day business!

1 Month
Today I took Maddie in for her 1 month appointment. She is actually 5 weeks old today! Everything checked out great and she is now 9 pounds, 7 ounces (50th percentile) 22 inches (75th%tile). Her head is measuring small and is only in the 25th percentile. She is going through a bad case of baby acne which the doctor said would get better in about 3 more weeks. She is still very cute even though she has red bumps all over her face and even in her hair!
She has been sleeping a lot during the day now because of the heat- it seems to just zonk her out! This means she is awake for about 7 hours straight at night and gets to sleep usually around 1am. Her longest sleep so far has been about 3-4 hours. Hopefully it will get better soon!
This first month went by really fast with lots of people visiting us each week. I had the help of my mom for the first week and then was on my own (well kind of because one day my mother in law came to help out and another day that next week my mom came back to help!) The biggest treat was having my sister Amorette and her husband come down from Washington and stay with us for a week. My sister and I took my mom to see the Broadway play Wicked in LA which was really good (but hard to be away from Maddie for so long when she was only 3 weeks old! I pumped some milk for Ben to feed her and it worked out OK).
My sister and mom threw a little Welcome Baby party back in Solvang that weekend and a whole bunch of people stopped by to meet little Madelyn. It was neat to see everyone and also to have our extended family to see and hold Maddie. Maddie's great grandpa "Campa" sat next to her bassinet the whole time and Maddie's great grandma "Nana" just kissed and loved and held her- it was a special time.
Maddie's latest development is that she has now found her hand- she has even sucked her little thumb but usually just sucks part of her fist/knuckles. She does this when she doesn't have a pacifier to suck on. She is so adorable to me and I just love to watch her each day as she makes different faces and new sounds. We love her so much!
